Hi roaringharp,

If you've entered the Music Festival, you're on the right path. I am sure your Music Teacher will be working with you. All private voice training is charged on an hourly rate (approximately $100 per hour). I know many students from SJC who have done very well at the Music Festivals in the past with that preparation alone. Listening to recordings of the music you will sing would help - but make sure it is performed by a really good singer. Practice with your teacher as often as possible, study and know the music to be well prepared.

For further education in music (voice), there are things a student can do to help themselves. Study well at school - it's a university so they will want to see your school transcript. If you're thinking of an American University, SAT will help. For an English University, Music at O and A levels will help, Good passes at Trinity or RSM exams, and if you're a pianist and have done exams in piano and theory that will be very helpful both for entry, and for your further studies.

Next, when you are ready to begin the application process, each school asks for about five different classical pieces prepared - check out the schools online that you're thinking of applying to - you will see the requirements on each site.- then have a well cut CD made and sent to the schools with your application. There is an application fee for each school - so choose three to five schools to which you will apply.

Travelling to audition is not advisable - better to invest in great preparation and a good professional recording of your audition pieces. Seek out forums (NFCS.net is a good one). You can read reports of different schools and voice training from singers who have attended these schools and find a good match for yourself.

Wishing you all the best in the Music Festivals - I'm looking forward to hearing all our wonderful talent.

Hi everyone! I'm new here but let me start off by saying CLASSICAL MUSIC ROCKS!!!! I started listening to it when my music teacher gave me projects to do on it. My favorite composers are: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (His music is so beautiful especially his piano concerto), Ludwig van Beethoven( His Choral Symphony rocks), Johann Sebastian Bach( His Toccata and Fugue is great), Joseph Hayden( His London Symphonies are amazing) and etc. Very Happy Very Happy
Feel free to ask me anything! Very Happy Very Happy

Hi Melanie,

Sorry I didn't see your post before - didn't realise there is a Page 2 going.

I am absolutely thrilled that there are schools encouraging children to listen to classical music - are you in Trinidad? That is so good as so many people who have never listened to classical music believe it is 'boring' stuff, when if they would give it half a chance and listen to well played orsung classical music - they would realise how much more entertaining, thrilling and wonderful to the senses it is.

For children to be exposed to classical music at an early age is truly so beneficial to their total education, whereas, as Paul Harvey wrote:
"Music education is imperative for anyone to grow up complete ... "Without the arts - including music – we risk graduating young people who are 'right brain damaged’”.

We do see the result here in Trinidad, where, inspite of an education system which appears truly great, there are so many leaving school but lacking in the formation that music brings to a child - mainly, listening skills, discipline and perseverance. All the best to you.
Smile
