I think it's inspiring, to see young singers getting record deals outside of the pop singing world... I always wonder though, because like, that Natalia Dopwell who has those concert clips on infovision here sometimes, she's got like a way better voice IMHO, but when I checked, she doesn't even have one cd out.
I thought I'm mention it because I've been wondering, what does it take for a non-pop or soca singer from Trinidad even to get on tv? Far-less of course, the international scene! |

First of all - welcome to the forum, PracticeP... !
I guess this thread then, is more about the gap between us here in Trinidad, and the singers coming from first world countries?
You certainly picked the right place to talk about Natalia Dopwell - she's appearing in a CMDFTT concert next month at the Queen's Hall (see thread on Strings, Song & Steel). _________________ The Classical Music Development Foundation of Trinidad & Tobago - www.classicalmusictt.org

| Australians, China and the US, following Europe, have focussed on the classical arts and give a lot of help by way of education, funding for classical events, etc. These 'old' civilisations know that music improves the quality of life of their citizens and that with systematic study its ability to improve the quality of life is enhanced dramatically. They understand that a country is judged to be culturally superior by their classical arts whereas in Trinidad it is still perceived by the majority as an elitist pursuit and outside of the ordinary person's understanding (which we know to be untrue). The broadcasting media ignores the world of western classical music, even though all forms of our indiginous compositions are built on western classical harmonies. Our corporate businesses will one day wake up to the benefits to our nation, and their businesses, of promoting classical events and enterprise - until then, our talented classical musicians will turn to 'first world' countries for their survival. |
